Dolphin Bits and Pieces - How to Ask for Troubleshooting Help

This is the first in a series of notes. I have a few random bits and pieces relating to notes about Dolphin, Orca and Ray that I will post now and again. This will be my first in a series and hopefully people will find some use for them. If you need anything more specific I can probably write a tutorial about, provided I get enough requests for it.

In the past I've gotten a few of my close friends and associates ask me for help with the Dolphin install or some troubleshooting. Since launching my nerd site, I am getting some questions that in some cases were kind of vague, but I sort of knew what they were trying to say. A few times, I've had to ask some basic questions about their install so I could get a point of reference.

When you are asking for help to troubleshoot an install, it is very helpful to get some initial information.

Some of the more common questions I will ask is:

1. What version of Dolphin are you running?
2. What is your hosting set up? Windows or Linux? Unix?
3. Do you have your php info handy?
4. For problems related with Ray, have they run the Ray trouble shooter? (btw, it is very handy!)
5. Where or when does the error occur?
6. Can you supply the error message?
7. Have you updated or changed your files recently?
8. Has your ISP updated or changed settings that you are aware of?

I am sure there are few other questions that a Dolphin developer will ask, but this is a start.

Dolphin nerds, what are your questions?

Hi,
I just downloaded Dolphin 6.0.0005 version and installed on a Windows32 machine. All the pre-requisite softwares like php, mySQL and GDlibrary have been installed successfully.
However, while installing the Bonnex and making the configuration changes, I can go as far as specifiying the "Site Details etc." and as soon as I enter the admin login and password details and click submit to go on to the next page where I need to provide information on setting up my Cron or batch jobs, I see more get "Internal Server Error 500" which is quite strange as I can't see any error message in the error log file for my Apache. the only info I can see is in the access file for Apache where it mentions that the response for the request was 500.

Any help would be really great as it seems to be too funny and mysterious.

thanks
Subhir

Hello. I have recently installed Dolphin, and it is running fine. The only issue I am having is that I cannot input non-latin characters for usernames. I can input non latin characters in all the other fields except for that one. Is there a way I can change that?

Thank you!

One more thing...I can go into the database and change the usernames to non-latin characters there, and log back in using those characters for the account, but I cannot use non-latin characters at initial sign up.

BTW: I am using the Cherokee language.

Any advice on how to make it so that members can change their profile from single to couple in the edit profile area rather than only able to select it on the join form?
