Dolphin 7 Status Update

Andrew Boon posted 21st of July 2009 in . 63 comments.

We have received good bunch of reports at forums and many have been added to Trac (special thanks to houstonlively). Now it looks like we are running out of reports and if nothing else comes-up we should be releasing Beta 2 tomorrow.

good news... how much beta of dolphin 7 are planned? thanks for reply...
Andrew Boon
I can only guess. Hopefully not many.
houstonlively
I'll begin testing beta 2 as soon as I can get moved to a different server. Seems as though D7 is not very happy behind a server firewall.

Once I do that I'll get back to doing what I agreed to do. I am glad to do my part to make Dolphin 100% bug free... zero defects is the only acceptable goal. I won't be posting any more in the blog section here, but I will frequent the forums. It's time to get to work building a site.
Andrew Boon
Betas are not planned. Every beta may become a release.

Alpha - we know there are bugs, and we know some features are not added/complete yet.

Beta 1 - we know there're bugs, but we think we won't be adding any new features.

Beta 2, 3, 4, 5, etc - we think there're some bugs left, but we don't see any and want the community to take a look.

RC - we can't find any bugs, community didn't report any bugs for the last Beta.

Release - either no bugs left and nobody found them.
thank you for the update.
see u here again tommorow.
greymatters
Thanks for the good news Andrew.

Can we also get the Beta 2, installable via cPanel, it saves much time and we can use that time to report Unity about bugs.
Andrew Boon
No, unfortunately. Cpanel self-installer takes quite a bit of time and needs arrangements with hosting. Not feasible at beta stage.
mallorca
Very good news. Hope to see something about the better Clustering support with the new release of Beta 2, Unoboonex?!
vikingabroad
Brilliant! For a first Beta, I actually thought that it was very good, regardless of bugs. And that is what the testing community is for. Thank you Houston and everyone else who contributed! Gotta love a good working open source community!
Jerismith
Did you guys fix the calendar on the join now page....it keeps wanting to close before you get the year in ........IF you open in and click on the month and day it closes before you can click on the year.....you must do it in that order to see the problem......then it won't let you just go back and change the year you have to click a different day.....change the year.......and then go back and click the right day
Jordache
Thanks that really good news

I've also found some bugs regarding the search with the magifying glass and the delete users from the admin panel as well as unregister themselfs.

In the page builder - navigation menu, to add/remove items seems to not be alined up that is you have to look where the item wants to drop according to where you want to put it so e.g if you want to put it in the 'Dashboard' you need to move it a few places to the left or right until it shows u it can drop over the 'Dashboard'.

Another see more thing is with the Avatar could it be possible if users could add there own avatar without having to crop it down because sometimes as i've noticed users forget.

With Dolphin 7 Beta 1 - is all the database tables the same?

Because if i wanted to update my current version from beta 1 to beta 2 would that be possible moving the users over in the database?

Thanks
Jordache
Another bug was with the 'Wall' - you cannot reply to a comment on the wall and users cannot delete their comments on the wall.

Not sure if these bugs have already been reported. Sorry if they have.
Nighto2007

Thanks for the update unoboonex and thanks houston...

Look forward to download beta2 tommorow..
Technoman
I hope you have fixxed alot of the bugs Andrey

Everyone, including houston, has put alot of time into uploading bugs into the trac system.

Boonex " PLEASE " DO NOT just release the same old bugs, cause this will make alot of people very pissed off, and there will a huge uproar ..... !!!!!!
iloveboonex
There r some bugs in Article and News Module. The text are not wrapped when admin Post a short news.
This is a good news for me. I love boonex like my nickname. We will buy this product when the final version released. What's about hiring Boonex Staff build this product according to our purpose? I wish I had the answer from Uno. Love you man...
jimie
Hope in the new beta the IE6 problem will get fixed because on IE6 it looks like hell :(
vikingabroad
slowly support for IE6 will go away completely I believe. Youtube wont support it shortly, which may have implications for any youtube mods running on D7.
Andrew Boon
Let me be honest here. We're dropping IE6 testing and won't be optimizing for it. Usage is falling (finally) and the browse is a nightmare in terms of development. It's not like you just need to code harder - it's a question of refusing to implement some features if we were to support IE6.

Everyone wants this bastard to go, including Microsoft.
Draxxon
Once Dolphin 7's beta test are complete, and you can't find any more bugs, I'd recommend setting it up and using it on Unity for a week or so as a RC before the final release. (Since you mentioned that you'd be transitioning Unity to Dolphin anyway) That much usage should shake out the last bugs, and could also shake loose any usability and/or integration issues as well.
Andrew Boon
That's pretty much how we plan it. FIrst we'll update BoonEx.com and will run it in "Beta" mode for a while.
Draxxon
Cool, thanks for the update.
NYStar
Looking forward to Beta 2 - will do a new install and start putting it through its paces... you folks are great.
ZopfWare
Will be installing D7b2 as soon as released... Our server environment looks good and we have many customers that are holding off until we finish testing.

Looking forward to many new D7 sites... good work guys!
wolf2217
Thanks once again for the update.
The important thing is that the community pitches in to look for as many bugs as possible as the results in the end will make the release that much more smoother and less rockier.
Thank you boonex and the rest of the Deep involvers of dolphin (rest of the community)
jyi123
How to update to D7 B2 from B1?
Do I need to re-install B2 from beginning or just copy and update files?

Anyway, thinks and waiting for update to B2.
tuba
GOOD JOB BUT I can not login even when requesting a new password reminder.. any ideas?
Andrew Boon
A few little things still keep popping up, so we'll have to do it 2morrow. In about 20 hours from now.
ZopfWare
The B2 release will be on July 23? Will a link be posted or will we be grabbing it from the TRAC?
tuba
Ok only way I could login is via facebook then changed my pw probably because you did some upgrades..
tuba

see moreunoboonex,

Dolphin 7; With Beta1 to Beta2

Is it possible to keep users that have registered/avatars/lang_en.php/navigation_menu/join form all the builder settings that ive edited the same on the beta 2 i.e i won't need to do it all over again?

Cannot i just import the old database again? or have some big changes gone on in the database?

Also i think this is a bug with Privacy as all Members can see each others profiles even when we set it so users can only view their friends.

Thanks
Jordache
that is that i won't need to get users to resign up...
Jerismith
oh.......in the dating thing.....i have to lower the amount of changes they can make to there profile......they can really mess up there profile given enough chances.....when looking for a date I guess I kind of have to protect them from making themselves look bad....wrong profile questions or making changes to much to the look and feel of there profile can hurt them in the dating arena without them even knowing what they did wrong on the profile and why no hits.....
Jerismith
I agree on the avatar thing.....even I could not figure out that I was suppose to crop it first....the wording must clarify it better or no crop.

Also, there needs to be error messages when you do not fill out the profile correctly. The little red x is not enough. It took me a minute to figure out why my profile would not save.

If you miss a field and the form wants it, make sure to put a notice when hitting save on the join now profile........so if Date of Birth is missing ....please see more write "Date of Birth missing" next to the save button when they click it so they clearly see what they have to go correct............(
MichelSwiss
This avatar thing is driving us 10 years back... The first alpha version of D7 was using a little thumbnail of the primary profile photo; that was a much better idea... But why to do simple if this is so simple to do complicated ?

Agree too about the join form.
Jerismith
I also think the photo viewing was much better in 6 because that is the main thing people want to see on a profile......photos have become way to difficult to find and view.....I am hoping my designer can take the profile and put the picture viewer back up on the profile page.....I would also like the music and player on that page......and video and video player on that page...........this clicking away from the profile thing will really annoy my customers. I can't stand it about facebook. I have see more had a dating service for 15 years and talked to many customers...they usually flip through the profiles with much eash which is what they really want

Profile gives a feeling of beeing "your area" and your viewing spot for your friends ...and postential dates.......to click away from of for every single thing you want to view has not been a very good idea....maybe be faster for loading but not a good navigational change......Sorry.......don't mean to sound negative......
MichelSwiss
Of course, you are 100% right (at least for me and hundreds of my site's members who gave up because of the poor end users ergonomics of Dolphin).

Dolphin script is technically greatly improved, and the admin part too. But, in my humble opinion of course, ergonomics of the navigation is worst than ever (was already not so good in the previous versions) with D7.

D7 is looking great at the first sight... but becomes quickly boring as soon as trying to browse such site.
Jerismith
I would much rather see the comments ....friends and all of that go in another area.....everything about you should remain on your original profile page.....in dating all the comment stuff will be taken out anyways...in the dating world people looking at your profile for a date...really don't want to see a bunch of letters and comments to you and who your friends are.....you have to keep the goal in mind here for the dating sites.......TO GET through the profiles as quick as possible to find your see more match......no going from page to page for one person
MichelSwiss
For that too, we are sharing the same point of view.
Jerismith
Sorry one last thing....I would be a single female looking for a single male but the way it is written is wrong....it needs to say
Single or not single......(for community sites) (not couple rarely would anyone want to share a profile)
Gender (not sex...mothers won't want kids wondering why is says sex on a profile if they see it)
and
Your orientation......straigt.....gay...not straight
Here for .......Dating ..networking...friends

this is probley all changable and already in place and I see more have taken up more comment space but oh well
MichelSwiss
Agree with all of that too.
rocker
This comment seems pretty selfish stating (rarely would anyone want to share a profile) ..it depends on if you're a couple on a 'couples' site or not... it'd be like me stating that stores should never sell apple juice, because nobody hardly ever drinks apple juice..People should never speak for others, as if how they feel is the way the rest of the world should feel also..Please Be considerate and not think that boonex is developing software just for you and noone else.
Jordache
Yes, i agree with you Jerismith about the profile being your area - i also reckon they should have a link on the main page of the profile and all your main item that maybe even users can manage what items they'd like on there profile?

I understand boonex is working hard to get the current bugs/problems fixed so maybe this can be for a later beta?

I'm just hoping we can keep our users from beta 1 to beta 2 because i've done what other sites have done - told my clients that this is a version see more 2 beta and we are updating all the time, this allows them to get familiar with our services aswell as find bugs and report errors.

Kinda like what google did :P

Thanks
Jerismith
Yes ..the friends thing really works for a community but in dating people don't want to see a bunch of people from the opposite sex writing the person they like....it discourages them from writing that member but I am sure they are community site focused right now...like you said maybe a later beta...... I will just have my designer take all of that out for my dating site but then I have to build the video music and photos back into the page.....I hope my designer can do it.....
ZopfWare
I hate to repeat what has already been said a dozen or more times here at Boonex...but this is a BETA release...NOT for general use...NOT for getting your members used to it, but to find Bugs for the RC or final release of this version of the software.... You can't be mad if you are USING the Beta version on a live site and then there is no path for you to upgrade...even Microsoft doesn't provide upgrade paths for beta versions of their OS's. i know I have been a beta tester for Microsoft (as a see more member of MSDN) for many years and it really sucks but it makes sense.
Jordache
First off,

me and another member of boonex have reviewed the current boonex dolphin 7.0 beta and according to no big changes in the database on trunk it seems that a copy of user tables/information would be possible.

I'm not being mad at all, I found my member can also find bugs, report it to me and i can report it on to boonex, this will help make the system more bug free.

As being a coder/web developer myself i can also do manual updates, knowing my requirements and goals that I've set see more for my site.

They wouldn't recommend the beta for general use, however its pretty much 'use at own risk'

Thanks

Jordache
Jerismith
Hopefully in future there will be a dating demo and a community demo....call me if you want any input.....(boonex ......not others please unless of course you are between 45 and 55 and 10 miles from my house LOL!

HA - I like you Jeri - most women are paranoid about giving a phone number online until they know you for a while, but you have published yours for the whole world to see. Sorry though, I squeaked by on the age, but I am 500 miles from you :-(

Jeri I am 50 I know how to cook, and do the laundry. Here's a tip to get slim, eat 6 to 8 times a day. And I am serious... LOL....

With regards to the photos in 6.1.x, I find it a bit frustrating that you can set up membership level permissions so that standard members cannot view photos or galleries of other members but if they go to the home page they can still see the thumbnails of these photos. If you click on someone's profile, the images of that member are still viewable as well as the thumbnails.

Kind of defeats the purpose of taking away the permission to view photos when they can still see them.

I personally haven't see more looked at the beta version of dolphin 7 but it would be great if removing this permission to view photos meant thumbnails too.

This issue is very important when you have members that want to protect their identity.

Thanks.
MichelSwiss
You're right (6.1). I can add that members with "suspended" status even still can send messages, greetings, ...
dknadmin
Can't wait to test the Beta 2. :)
AngelaAshburn
when would D7 be ready for public approximately? not the beta versions?
richardvsalazar
The new face of Hookie is much cleaner. It will be pretty nice if the Hookie will have the ability to have the members to share the contents of the page to major sites. It is a must to have a widget available for members. Boonex here is the site where you can get the widget--> http://sharethis.com. Also it will be a pretty nice addition to have a twitter like bulletin and followers/following features of twitter. Boonex this features of twitter launch them to stardom. Mimicking this features is see more a nice addition to hookie final edition
rvbihari
i think birth date would be nicer in DD/MM/YY format
