Dolphin 7 (Hookie) BETA 8. Now with "6to7" migration script.

Andrew Boon posted 28th of October 2009 in . 92 comments.

This one took a bit more than we expected, mostly due to the security update we talked about before. Anyway, we expect this to be the last beta and the next release will bring the long-awaited "update scripts" tail.

6to7

The coolest part about today's package is the "6to7" data-transfer script. Something you're supposed to use for moving site database from Dolphin 6 to Dolphin 7. Yeah, turns out that we'll be releasing it as well, so give it a test drive, please. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Install Dolphin 7.0 to the same server as Dolphin 6.1.6, so migration script would be able to get data from it.
  2. Your Dolphin 6.1.6 site will stay put, so you can play it a few times, no sweat.
  3. You can only migrate from 6.1.6 (6.1.5 could play ball too, but we haven't checked).
  4. Dolphin 7 installation must be a "clean install" with all the modules installed (those you're using at 6.1.6 at least).
  5. Start from "Profiles" first, then go on with the rest of the data.
  6. Migration is a "cron job" thing, so cron jobs have to be properly configured.

Since this version includes a data migration script are we to assume that D8 to RC will not require a fresh install?
Rappi
Migration from 6.1.6 to Beta8 is not the same as Upgrade Beta8 to RC!
Rappi
Migration from 6.1.6 to Beta8 is not the same as Upgrade Beta8 to RC!
rootherb
I understand that. Why would I bother to migrate the data if I will need to do a fresh install for RC?
MadMax11
This is wonderful news, thank you.

D7.B8 is gud to know.
RC will be a real triumph.

clicking cancel in the pundits login prompt returns error.
is that a Bug?

what about migrating from 7.0 beta to the 8.0 is that possible and how ?
thanks
CALTRADE
Nope - looks like you wasted your time on beta 7.
juliansoy
So,,, if i install beta 8 would i be able to migrate to RC1 or 7. just making sure.
Stadsk
So, does this mean I can now install my live site with D7B8 and later migrate to RC onward?

I have waited for so long for this. I lost almost a year hosting without a live site. I just kept waiting for this day.
UFO360
this is only 6 to 7 or this is 6 to 7 to 8

i have the 7 and i want to update to 8
Rappi
Its from Dolphin 6.1.6 to Dolphin 7 beta 8!
Dolphin 8 ??? This is great!!! I think it came in the year 2015.......
mydatery
Neither of you can read today... Go get your glasses...

UFO this is to migrate D6.1.6 to D7 for those who have working sites and so on. It's purely a data migration type thing.

Rappi, He has D7 Beta 7 and was asking about migration for D7B7 to D7B8...

Your also incorrect on D8... That's actually been released at 8/23/2291, sorry man, you were 276 years early there.
sale64
Nice work, boonex...:)
Thanks!
jimie
Will we be able to update from now on or we sill have to make a fresh install for RC versions ?
CALTRADE
It is nice that there is a working upgrade script from D6.6 - but this means that 90 percent of your members will have to upgrade from D6.4 just to do the migration, and then it will be just into another "beta". Will there be an upgrade script from this beta to the first RC? If not, everyone will be wasting their time since we will just have to tear down all our work and start all over still again. It was my understanding, from your blog post "when" - that this beta would be see more released two weeks ago, and the RC was going to be released last Friday. Does that mean the RC will be about a week off? - if so, I think most people would rather wait (unless they have time on their hands and want to volunteer as your testing staff). On the other hand, if you could provide this upgrade script we could put all this behind us and finally get going on our long-delayed applications. If you can't or won't do that, for whatever reason, could you at least give us an honest date for the RC, so we can make rational business decisions. Many of us really believed that "when" blog post you wrote.
mickscool
Thanks a lot Andrew,
Would love to see the RC1 by next friday..keeping fingers crossed !!!
mydatery
Caltrade, this doesn't call for tearing down your currrent site. It's a migration type thing. Meaning you have to have the D6.1.x up and running and install a D7B8 on the same server and set up the cron job to migrate the data over for you. This may disrupt the D6 site (not sure yet as it could potentially at least tie the hell out of a server if it's a large DB) but you'll still have your D6 site when it's done. By doing it this way, Boonex is enabling you to begin testing a production form see more of the software while still holding on to your current site's functionaltiy.
CALTRADE
I was talking about tearing down D7B8 - not my D6 site. Since there apparently will be no upgrade script to the RC we will either have to try to keep it updated through Trac, or tear it down and start all over again.
So do we still expect the RC to be on the 1st? or around there?
progammer
I love boonex! and I visit boonex everyday for updates :D

and am impatiently waiting for stable version of dolphin 7
totallyfreak
ok cool, finally we see RC in the trac section...

but my only question is when you will release the RC version... it was supposed to be last friday... so in 1 week or 1 month?
mastermindsro
Only GOD knows how I am still able to wait :D
Anyway good job Boonex! The only negative thing I can say about you is that you never finish a release on time..
Except that.. you guys are brilliant! Thanks!

when first open http://demozzz.com/dolphin7b/, the google map always float out the box, to be belowed th "public groups" and "public store". It restore to its right position only if try to drag it somewhere. interesting.

Upgrading to beta 8 is not a good idea right now till they fix the new "security" feature. The site is so secure now that not even an administrator can change things!
Zarcon
Im sorry but I had too many issues after the install of Beta 8. I just removed it. I was really looking forward to this but got a bit aggravated after the 3rd install attempt.

I cant get anything to load with the flash loader (You cant even do it with your online demo)

Actually I could get to upload was photos (as long as you didnt use the flash uploader)

Guess I will just have to hope for the best on the RC.. crossing fingers
VictorT
Yes, there was a bug with Flash uploader. It is fixed now.

Can you list all other issues please?

Developer team needs to know it to help you to resolve it.

Stating that you have just "too many issues" without listing any of them is just nothing than an empty entry.
Zarcon
Hey Victor, I sent you an email also, but I will list the problems I ran into in the Forum called "Beta8 Issues I have"

Thanks,
Chris
CALTRADE
Looks like people are having serious problems with this beta and most people think it is a bad idea to even install it - some like Zarcon are removing it from their systems. I was really hopeful that after Boonex missed its commitment to get us the RC by last Friday, that they would skip this beta entirely, and go straight the the RC. By RC, I mean not necessarily a release that is free of bugs, but one that we can upgrade to the next release. That's what everyone has been asking for, and I don't see more understand why Boonex is refusing to help on this. We have all wasted a massive amount of time trying to make these betas work and everyone has been hurt by this approach. I have lost some opportunities because of this that are just heartbreaking- ones that won't ever come back. Without some commitment of help from Boonex on upgrades, this beta is a total waste of time. You should only install it if you have nothing better to do.
VictorT
Looks like you are trying to mislead community members by posting such comment, which content is mostly based on the experience of other member (as Zarcon, see above) but not your OWN one. Basically, it is a kind of troll to me.

You even don't know what Zarcon's issues are, and you only know that there are "too many issues" of him. So, I have posted above to clarify that list with him while you decided to put it across of others.

And now on, please speak for the issues and bugs you see more are experiencing by yourself only.
Zarcon
I have posted my issues I'm having in the forums here:

http://www.boonex.com/unity/forums/topic/Beta8-Issues-I-Have-Please-Read.htm
CALTRADE
Oh, I would be happy to Victor - because my install didn't work AT ALL. With your usual consideration to the users you didn't bother mentioning that you changed the technical specification so the product no longer works with php 4.2 - wasting several hours of mine that could have been avoided with some simple information. If you thing I am "misleading" members why don't you go to the forums so you can see how wonderfully this is working out. That is where you always tell us to make our see more comments - apparently because we are easier to ignore there.
chrisk
I'm also removing this buggy beta after lots of problems...

I even can't login as admin after several tries to reinstall on different servers and directories... 4 Installations, no one worked. This sucks!!!

unlogical security messages:

- wrong php version [correct version installed]
- headers already send...
- "Secutity" Messages blabla...
- No way to login as admin (Name and Password 100% correct)

It's really a waste of time installing it. I spend a whole evening and night see more installing and trying to solve the problems.

:-(
AlexT
It looks like not clean install, please install D7B8 into empty directory. There is no upgrades from D7B7 to D7B8.
eddiemoth
I like the privacy options in Dolphin 7 and I am waiting anxously for Dolphin 7 to be released!
luca_it
WOW! a new beta release with a new set of bug...now we can play with bug, write in the forum, wait that boonex ad it to trac (if they do it) and then all work good...

Like phpids...we are under attack...

Hey Unoboonex does your guys test beta before release it???? I think no because in 10 click you can get one or more under attack...
ydrargyros
@VictorT (please we need an answer)
Will updates be available from this version on?
I have my hands on both templates and plugins and need to know this before i finalise them to go on-line!
derartmedia
yeah...the next milestone of a full buggy BETA version!
juliansoy
Sorry to said this but I dont understand why it doesnt work for some of you guys, so far I have not found any major isues, installation was easy and no problems with log ins, the only problem I found so far its that when paste any html code (myspace Comments)into forums it wont post.

PS. I removed my old beta7 and did a clean b8 install.
westmerch
have you try posting a blog post?
westmerch
I meant on your d7 b8 installation? mine says: "possible attack"... :(
juliansoy
Same here, it doesnt matter where you paste any code it will said the same. blogs, events, ads. At home didnt have problems pasting any code to the wall but for some reason at work it wont allow me to. besides that nothing else i'll post any other problems if found
mallorca
No problem with install. Up to the point that Beta 8 doesn't ask for license anymore. And adding the license direct to settings takes no effect. But apart from this, Beta 8 works mostly well. So no reason not to install, to get it to the end of beta and RC release. Without the community it will take much longer... so let us install, try and report .... so short before the target RC!!!
mallorca
Correction: Tricked by my browser or glasses .... no, accidentally I created for beta 8 the same db user name as I have for beta 7. So this will be the reason for not being asked for license anymore. At least I think so and install once more.....

What really chaps my hide is that (aside from manually moving all my info from beta 7 to beta 8's database) I am screwed as far as I can tell. Now we all know that using betas is a risky proposition but if my beta testers have to constantly go through the sign up process again I am going to lose a lot of great people and a lot of work. Uno could you please give us a definitive answer as to the possibility to migrate from beta 7 to beta 8. Thanks :) I am a patient guy and I love the software, see more I can't imagine the years of work that went into developing Dolphin and couldn't be happier that you have done it. I will be patiently waiting for a clear answer ;)
CALTRADE
I believe they already have - and the "definitive" answer is no. I would love to be proved wrong on this, but that is my understanding. This answer of course begs the question - why install this beta at all? - especially if you might lose your best members. All I can figure is this beta testing is now just for people who like playing around with software and have time on their hands. There are people like that here.
chancedevin
That was my understanding as well but operating on "understanding" alone is getting slightly old. I am the type of person that will tell you even if it is bad news and I operate my business on the same principle. I like tinkering with new software as much as the next guy but my members however don't. I can say that until I know there will be a way to upgrade from one to the next I'll stay with D7B7 it has plenty to keep me occupied :p.

Thanks for the reply Cal I appreciate it. see more Still hoping to hear from Boonex but I am not holding my breath as I have learned that can kill ya lol.
shaneed
Hello all,

According to the instructions, i followed each step for the migration but no success i guess. After 24 hours, the migration script still shows "in process". And excuse me, i have few hundreds of profiles.... Any feedback from unoboonex? Or at least a hint for an easier manual migration...

And yes, i may have that patience :)
AlexT
Please check if cron jobs are installed and work properly.
ArnMan
its been a while since I have left a post on here, and today is the first day, I have tried out the new dolphin 7. After installing, which I think is much less painful that previous installations.
After going through, but not all, because there is just so much new stuff in there my head spins.
Only thing so far, that I have found that isnt working for me, and for some reason, I have always have had problems adding new things to the profile fields. All the version of dolphin has given me grief. see more Maybe I am not doing it right.

I add a new block in view, edit profile with one dropdown select box, and when I go to view the profile, it isnt there. Maybe I am not doing osmething right I dont know.
In fact I am only getting half my list of stuff that is supposed to be showin on there but isnt.

Anyway, I will dig some more on boonex to see how to make profile fields, and make em show up. Other than that, I am amazed at all the new features, since 6.1.4, my last version lol
CALTRADE
Victor, you admonished me on my earlier post because I had referenced Zarcon's issues, perhaps not knowing that he and I had exchanged messages, and also not knowing that I HAD installed this beta. I installed it on a server that has legacy php 4.2 programs where the other beta had worked without major issues, but since you didn't tell us the technical requirements had changed this turned out to be a waste of time - it didn't work at all there.

I have now installed this still again on a php see more 5 server and right off the bat am experiencing major problems. In fact, you get that "Possible attack!!!" message others have reported even when you just try to log in (see for yourself if you want- it is at: http://california-business.us).

As you should be able to see from the forums, the number of bugs and problems has increased dramatically with this beta, and people are naturally extremely concerned. It is difficult to see what the advantage is to installing this beta - if it is just to be "good Boonex citizens" I think we have done that already.

No one wants to spend a ton of time with this beta when it is absolutely certain that they will have to destroy their work and will have wasted their time. The people who sit back and do nothing will almost be in a better position than the people who spin their wheels and get more and more frustrated trying to get this eight beta to work - for no real reason, and for no advantage to them.

You guys can fix this situation. All you have to do is announce, and really commit to an upgrade script from this beta to the next beta or release candidate. This would make 90 percent of your members happy again in one fell swoop, and we would be on the same team again, instead of working at odds with each other.
houstonlively
Your constant whimpering and yammering about Beta to Beta upgrades is really quite nauseating. Why don't you give it a rest? In spite of Boonex stating again, and again, and agsin, that there will be no upgrades between Betas, you still think your incessant sobbing will get you what you want. The reality is, most people around here would rather they spend the time more wisely.... like on stabilizing the product.
tcradiodj
I am not sure why people are mad about another beta instead of the RC. The beta seems to have a boat load of bugs to the point that most wont even install it. An RC will be the same. I am not even going to bother until there is a STABLE version released. With all the mods, changes, ect to our sites, whats the use in installing a buggy version when you just will end up getting mad and tearing it all down anyways?! Wait till they get the bugs fixed then do an install :)
tcradiodj
I plan on waiting until a stable version comes out with a stable upgrade module. I have way to much time and money wrapped up in this software to mess around with buggy betas. It just isnt worth the hassles. It kinda reminds me of windows!
