hi all,

are you all still playing around with servers to get the full advantages of D7 to work at home.  i will show you the complete guide that only takes you as long as it takes to install the correct software! that wont cost you a penny... well apart from a domain name. but you may have one already, so forget about Xamp and Wampserver which is ok for running simple sites.

well here is the info..

(1) Download  Ubunto desktop 10.4 or the latest version,  its about 700 mb in a ISO format, and then burn iso to cd , if you have not got a iso burner software then download a free one from th net.

(2) install it either on a dedicated pc or along side windows. iv installed mine on a dedicated pc for ease. just follow the install options and keep all the default one's , after install you can then boot up your system and then click on {system}{administration}{update manager} this will search the net for your updates just like on windows.

(3) Goto http://ehcp.net/?q=node/153  and click on the www.ehcp.net/download download link, this will take you to sourgforge where it will download the program.( This program is a complete web hosting Control panel that creates virtual host, just like any other hosting company, but it also installs the complete Apache 2 server PHP server SSH server Bind9 server fmpeg coding and everrything else that allows any script or web program to be hosted.

(4) If your not used to linux operating systems then here a simple guide to extract files and install linux program's , ok so you have downloaded the EHCP program, you will need to extract it from its archive,(easy) goto Places along your task bar,- and click on Downloads, and also click on the {Home Folder}  in {Places}  so you should have TWO panels opened..   ok  now drag the EHCP file from {Downloads} to the  {Home Folder} panel.... Next --then right click on the Ehcp file and select {Extract here}  Once extracted.. you can  close the Two panels..

(5) Click on {Applications} along the task bar, then click on {Accessories} {Terminal}  This will open a command shell, ok now type in   " cd ehcp " do not enter the quotes"" just     cd ehcp      this tells the command shell to goto the ehcp directory.  OK now type  "  sudo ./install.sh "  again no quotes ""   just        sudo ./install.sh           ..... you will be prompt for your password... after correct password the program will start to install, just follow the options.

(6) after completion you can now start creating web hosting accounts,  but you will need to setup you name servers at your domain registar to point to your server  like mine is set to NS1.mybizcard.net   NS2.mybizcard.net and forward my domain of www.mybizcard.net to my real external ip: 62.255.138.161  , you can find out your real ip address by typing in GOOGLE  ( my ip )      also you will need to enter this in the setings of the EHCP program.

NOTE: please do write down your user names and passwords when making accounts and installing Ubunto and EHCP cus its so easy to forget whats watt.

Also you can download Webmin from http://www.webmin.com/ and install it just by downloading the DEB package and the install scrip will automatically setup the web base server GUI panel, wich is a neet bit of software.

if you need any help then just give us a buzz
regards Spudnick

can you provide some sample data/specs and speed etc.?
While I use the Debian Server rather than the Ubuntu version, my setup is pretty much identical. I use EHCP and just apt-get it to the server letting it set itself up. Once it's set up I tweak a few settings for security reasons. I'm running 5 sites from mine at present on a standard residential 10MB connection with very little speed issues. I've got members connecting to my sites from around the world and no one has complained about slow page loads or connections thus far. (I also just recently see more added a free cloud/security service for all of my sites which greatly reduces the bandwidth required to serve up pages since all static content is now cached on their cloud servers.)
