Customizing Profiles

Dear Boonex:

I have been waiting 2 years for you all to place a mod in the dolphin to be able to customize members profiles. This is a VERY important need for my type of website.

Each time a release comes out you say next release,next release. Now i see you have planned this for D7 (I hope). I can only afford to wait for this one more time around, then i must figure out if i want to stay with Dophin or move on.

Can you say for sure you will have this option for members in the D7 release? And can you PLEASE answer this time. I never get a direct answer from you on this and been asking for 2 years.

Here's your answer (although is not an official answer)

The task is named "Profiles Customization":

http://www.boonex.com/trac/dolphin/query?status=new&status=assigned&status=reopened&milestone=7.1&order=priority

This feature will be added on Dolphin 7.1 - so after the beta.. don't worry if it's there - it will be made..
Juker
Spoken like a true "Pundito". Congratulations!
LightWolf
Just because they are saying on the task that it will be in does not mean anything. They never answer this one question i have put to them for 2 years. Come on it is NOT that hard to add this feature for a programmer.But to constantly blow my request off without even answering it makes one feel like their voice on here does NOT count. I guess a woman's voice means nothing on this site anymore.

hahaha yeah i bet it isn't.

Don't worry, I will insist as much as I can for this, you got my word.. I also want this feature (and is a must these days for any community script..)
LightWolf
Thank you for your response but as you say, it's not official. I would like to hear now from Boonex staff. And yes it is VERY important and i do not see why they have not put this mod in sooner as everyone has this.
Juker
Hello Dear One,

Hopefully we can help you. I have placed your question on the Pundits General Forum. No one deserves to get an answer to their question more than you.

LightWolf
Thank you very much Juker i appreciate this.

Is there a reason why one of the mods would not work?

I have seen several that look good, most recently one recommended by another user created by MichaelSwiss.

They really don't seem very expensive, either. Perhaps I am missing something, since I am new to Boonex. *smiles*
LightWolf
MichaelSwiss said in the past he sent the mod to Boonex, and I am not sure why it was not installed. And yes a mod would work but we were told a long time ago that they were going to implement a mod in the new Dolphin and since then they will not comment as to why it is taking so long.

LightWolf, I think it would very helpful if you started a seperate blog that covered in as much detail as possible, how you you envision profile customization within Dolphin. I don't think a blanket description of this feature that says.. like you can on myspace... will work here. To get Boonex started on this, it would be helpful if there were a list of very specific features... the most important ones. I don't think you will ever see the degree of customization that is available on Myspace, see more but that may not be a bad thing.
LightWolf
I feel this would be a waste of my breath hon. We all know what I am talking about, and Boonex knows that what they have so far on D7 stinks.lmao It doesn't even work. I need each members site to stand out alone not look like everyone else's. As a Spiritual site this is very important.
houstonlively
I disagree. It would not be a waste of time. You really do need to spell out specifics for these guys. Don't assume they know what you're talking about.

The first time I asked if D7 would have privacy settings, I got the impression that the Boonex developers had no idea what I was talking about.
tyke
Id be interested too lightwolf in the details of what you had in mind for this. Ive tried this myself for a spiritual site and no matter what you do, change the profile backgrounds, members upload spiritual music, theres not much else you can do to hide the fact that its a blumming dating site which aint good for a spiritual site.
This is a very great feature to have. It's much like letting members chose their own layout, that way, not all profiles look the same. I'm not speaking about changing your background color or text, I mean like allow users to change the position of the fields to their needs...Currently all profiles are displayed based on how the admin sets it up. Would be nice for members to customize it in that sence...
Juker
LightWolf - Please look at the link below. This is Dadniel's Profile Customizer.

I have seven sites running on xampp and I have this mod installed. Every profile admin is independent and the style possibilities are endless.

I'd like to see a list of what eveyone thinks the most important features would be. Although I would like members to be able to customize their profile for a unique look, this ability is not without it's down side. One of the things that drives me nuts about Myspace is that viewing some highly customized profiles is excruciatingly slow because they are loaded with gadgets, and use tiled background images that much to large in size. Watching some of the profiles load, brings me to tears. It actually see more prompted me to install a browser plugin that simplifies myspace pages by stripping out the things that slow page loading so much.

I like the idea of customization, but these sort of issues would need to be addressed at the beginning. I'd really like to offer it to my sites members, but not at the expense of slowing the site to a crawl... a la Myspace.
Juker, that doesn't customize the profile in the way she means. The issue is the block layout..If i'm an artist I want my pics displayed at the top, If I'm a music producer I want my music displayed on the top block...
LightWolf
I would like to see that the members can move and create new blocks for their profile, also change the background as well. I also think in the admin section a option to allow or disallow ads to be placed by admin on top or bottom on members profiles as well. I personally disagree with ads completely on the members profiles, and i will not allow this on my site, but others use them to pay for their site. My site will be completely free and ad free on members profiles. In time I hope to pay for the see more site by ads on certain main site sections.
Juker
Thanks Mickyb - it's more of a CSS issue then - And I can offer that I have had some custom page layout done for me by one of the top template makers. I don't want to sound like I'm advertising but both Dadniel and Simion are capable of making these changes. - We will soon have access to the V7 Admin panel and we can go from there with Boonex on this issue.
Don't know how difficult it would be to implement this, but the member would have the same layout the admins have, like the admin> Fields builder and there they move the block around to how they want for their profile..

Well I came across this today:
http://www.open-lab.com/mb.ideas/index.html#

Now I like the concept of Floating mbContainers. Since MB is using many of the JQUERY files BoonEx already implements in the backside Admin. I don't see why I couldn't change the frontend to optimize ModularBox Layout.

Don't know if I would scattered them as MB but I likey the functionaility and expansion of the concept as a whole for frontside Navigation.

What do you think LightWolf, MickyB, Tyke?
LightWolf
That site is way to scattered..lol Sorry but this looks too confusing for people who want to just relax..lol
sombRIA
:) Agree 'scattered' was what I saw at first, But what I like is the way ModularBoxes are floating, collapsable which if used in the Profile Pages of Dolphin allows customization anyway you want with regards to ModBoxes :) at least.
I'm for anything that will help the members..lol

Simply being able to drag and reorder the blocks would be good - the blocks should have a minimize function on them too so that the user could hide them if they desired - this is not a huge cod change - simply css / ajax.

As far as user customisation of blocks is concerned I'm currently writing a mod to add the datatype html to profile fields - this will also sanitize the content by allowing admins to whitelist commands.

With this mod installed you can provide a field in the profile where the see more user can add html to personalize the account. Or if you make it only editable by admins yuo can add a field for the user - It opens up a whole list of possibilities...

This is also the correct way of controlling html posted within user submitted profile fields - other mods simply remove the sanitization from profile fields to allow the user to post anything they wish - A huge security risk!!
DeeEmm
cod - lol - I meant code
tyke
Cod DeeEmm, LOL nowt wrong wi a bit of fish, good for ya.....

I hope whatever comes of the profile customization that its kept simple to use for user. not everybody knows how to lay down HTML, or put in #234765 colour codes to change colours, which ive seen not long ago on one site. They boasted that any member could create their own customised profile, Yeah sure, if you know CSS and so on, needless to say, everybody still had the default profile because Most people dont know how to do that, they see more just want simple options to click on the whole. i think people who programme for a living, it seems so easy for them, that they forget that not everybody can do just the simple things like mentioned above, so i hope its kept user friendly for most part.

Regards

This is not profile customization per se - it is just a mod to add a html datatype.

This is what it does...

If you include a text box in the profile it will only allow you to type text into it - if you add html - it converts it so that it displays as text - it basically 'sanitizes' it.

So with this mod - instead of choosing a text box - you can choose a html box. This checks which html elements are being inputted against a list of allowable elements and removes the ones that you don't with see more to be used.

It is simply a mod to provide better functionality - how you implement it is down to you.

Regarding profile customisation - to provide an easy interface to be able to change the profile - each element needs to be controlled via code - this can be very limiting as the elements that can be changed are pre-defined as are the values they can be changed to.

CSS offers the greatest flexibility - give each user access to their own css file - which is unique - they can modify it from a text field in their profile - this way the user can control the position / colour / appearance of the content but cannot actually change the content itself - this also makes mods like the one I mentioned before for block reordering simpler to implement.

This can be further evolved to utilise 'css tags' (imagine BB tags but for CSS) - anybody should be able to understand a simplified version.

Here's an example...

[my_profile_block_name]
blue
150px
[top]150px[/top]
[my_profile_block_name]

Can you guess what it does????

In css this would be...

.my_profile_block_name
{
position:absolute;
left:150px;
top150px;
background-color:blue;
}

The css is easier IMO - lol - but you get the general idea.

I have done this on other sites - the css file is called from the database - this means it is fully editable by both the user and by the program

Anyhows.....

I'm rambling and i should be working....

DM.
DeeEmm
ahh yes - forgot to add - for the css tags you can also have buttons to add them - much like phpBB.

Having re-read you post in more detail tyke - I agree - perhaps I have a tendency to consider such stuff as easy - which to many it is not...

It may be a contentious issue though - some will want simplicity whilst others will want flexibility.

So....

Perhaps a more usable / dynamic solution would be an extension of the block drag and drop mod - each block has a menu with a few simple point see more and click options for colour attributes / font attributes / etc

anyhows - more ramblings.....
