BoonEx.com and Hookie

Andrew Boon posted 17th of March 2009 in . 45 comments.

Traditionally update of BoonEx.com website for every major Dolphin version release took a couple of extra weeks and delayed the big day. BoonEx Unity upgrades are also often get slowed down due to Dolphin development, so we had to do something about it... and here's the plan:

BoonEx.com will be powered by Dolphin.

I mean it. This seems to be so obvious, yet we never really came to the decision. Honestly, there's no excuse for not doing it before. BoonEx is a community and BoonEx.com should be powered by community software - by Dolphin.

So, with the release of Dolphin 7 you will see BoonEx.com as the first community site powered solely by Hookie, which will do the job for Unity, Trac and even Store.

Consider the benefits:

- no more parallel development: all our time will go into Dolphin improvement and we would have to make it great.

- non-stop live testing by an active community with about 50,000 members.

- real-life working demo

- our full commitment to make Dolphin fast, secure, usable and effective... or we're out of business.

Hookie would need a few extra features to make it up to the task, but they are already being developed for the default package. So, the idea is to run BoonEx on an unmodified Dolphin.

So, expect a few extra modules, such as Store, Files, Wiki, Feedback and some functionality for order tracking.

These additions are believed to SAVE time before release, since we'd be able to use the entire BoonEx team for their development, while BoonEx.com has been managed by a smaller group and would still have to updated before Hookie is out.

The timeline I posted before is likely to be changed, but we'll keep you informed. For now we plan to publish a new Alpha build every 3-4 days and the next one should be out on Friday.

We'll also update Trac this week to display current progress.

Stay tuned.

Good thinking..
But I must say the Dolphin 7 interface is not too easy for new users.. something must be done to simplify the navigation...
cbassthefish
I really must agree with you there. When I myself first logged into Dolphin 7 I found myself slightly lost. I got one friend request and had problems trying to work out how to accept it. Eventually after clicking on the photo of the user, then messing around somemore, the "Befriend" link is the one to "accept" a user friend request. The "Befriend" link is also used to send someone a friend request. I found this really confusing and it took me some time to work out even see more though I have a working D6.4 website with 400 users.

I think Terabyte Hosting held this position from the onset. Good Going. Cant wait to see it happen.

I just can't wait for friday to install D7 and get going :)

>>the idea is to run BoonEx on an unmodified Dolphin

So if Boonex.com will be running on Dolphin 7, will its focus lean towards dating? I mean Dolphin 7 seems to cater to online dating sites right out of the box.

Hint: we need more females around here to make this really work.
Andrew Boon
I hope BoonEx.com case would show how Dolphin may be used for absolutely non-dating sites.

A little later we'll update 4ppl.com with Dolphin 7 too, to show how it can be used for dating-only sites as well.
LightWolf
I don't use Dolphin for a dating site, my site is all Paranormal and Spiritual which i needed for a long time. Thanks Boonex for the opportunity to allow me to provide a place where people can come receive help and guidance.

@ unoboonex

IMHO it will be much more difficult to show how Dolphin may be used for a real dating site... (where members will see only profiles that match with their sexual orientation...)
Now I'm waiting for this 4ppl update ;-)
Quite sceptical but still hopeful :-))
LightWolf
This news is great to hear. We really appreciate you keeping us updated.

Andrew,

O.K. - Sounds Good! - 50,000 voices all evaluating a "Live" copy of the program. It's Gotta Work!!!

But, please my dear young entrepreneurial friend - Divide the 50,000 members into three groups, each criticizing a specific application of your software, I.E.: Social & Dating, Business & Enterprise, and Educational. If you will start now to make these critical distinctions it will pay off enormously. Let's take this Version 7 and together we can develop it to suit the see more needs of a complex worldwide society.

This is a team effort!

Let me repeat DosDawg's "DUH" comment. I always wondered why we could never get answers about getting features that are already in Boonex in our Dolphin installs.

Junker - good post - to your list I would add "adult sites" and "community sites" - by "community" I mean the regional community sites many are building here - I think this technology is destined to replace local newspapers, which are tanking fast. Each of these groups should be Dolphin groups see more and forums. This would especially help the long suffering business users of Dolphin here.

@unoboonex "our full commitment to make Dolphin fast, secure, usable and effective... or we're out of business."

This is one of the best news I've heard in a while.

Focus and commitment. With enough focus you will get through just about anything so this is indeed good news.

As far as non-dating sites, I've produced several non-dating sites and have found it a hassle to track down the dating parts of Dolphin. However, in the finality of evaluating other social net progs, Dolphin see more was the best one for my needs. I am smitten by it.

My own tutorial site run on Dolphin and I have been working on integrations with WordPress, Pligg, Joomla and etc. No real timeline for it but just my own personal mashups.

Thanks so much for the update.

...sip...

Now this is really getting exciting.

Excellent idea...no better way to improve than by using it as your default application.

I may sound a bit like a broken record but, after viewing the D7 preview, I would really like to know if D7 will eventually have a true multi-file uploader. Not the multi-file upload that is currently installed in the D7 preview. What I'm talking about is an uploader utility like MySpace has....one that will allow you to select a whole batch of photos in a single browsing section all at the same time, then see more clicking Upload one single time. Not the very tedious method of "Click Browse - navigate to directory - select a single photo - click OK - now click + sign to add photo - repeat whole thing 20 times - then click Upload" No no no, this is a terrible, time consuming, aggravating method that nobody on this earth enjoys!! ;)

Developers, will D7 have a better uploader? If you don't know what I mean, please look at the MySpace upload utility. It is superb...you can even use it to create new photo albums. Dolphin really needs one that is comparable. Without it, the Photo Album funtionality will be crippled, and quite honestly, nobody will upload lots of pics if they have to use the old method.

Thanks for your time, keep up the great work!

I am happy to report that AndreyP let me know that he is working on this. Awesome! Can't wait for the Alpha!

I always wondered why all BoonEx sites weren't ran on Dolphin.

- Full commitment to make Dolphin fast, secure, usable and effective... or we're out of business."

Nice slogan, I look forward to all future progress.

Thanks for the update.

On "search" fill form, i hope more friendly, simple, and more effective. Like facebook have. That more usefully. People loves facebook because they "search" fill form can find they primary school friends (friends from long time ago).
jyi123
100% Agreed.
I've bought and installed multiple photo up loader modification from Expertz site. It is just as same as you
description.

D7 is really need to embed a real, real multiple photos up loader at one browsing and one click.
insanespeed
vbulletin integration (especially since it was a listed feature for v6)....and a more granular classifieds section are both necessary. (ex: chevrolet :: parts :: interior)
sammie
sounds like Boonex have been listening to me after all, YAY good move guys. sounds great and yes Terabyte has used Dolphin for its hosting site for 8 months, cant sell hosting for something if you dont use it and show it works yourself.

cant wait.
Evandromar
Dolphin 7 this too ... I do not know if an application will boonex team :)... only comments.

may be in the project, but in doubt leave here my request ... to access a photo of an album, you go to the photo gallery, and at this point, I feel the need for a menu of navigation between photos of the album ...
ps: otherwise the user must return to the album and choose another picture to vizualizar ):!!!

one more detail, I became friends with myself that is correoto?

Thanks to all ...

unobonex, see more as the values of free dolphin 7 "upgrade"?
grv
it should be fast & furious!!!! Thanks unboonexx for the news!!!!

Great idea, I become more and more a fan not just of boonex but also of your company. You are innovative. Its a big idea use open source for a buisness model and give the community a voice! The boonex community is growing fast, and I think its the best way for growing!

The idea to use your own script for the community ist GREAT. So I hope you take a look on SEO and focuse it more if its important of your own marketing mix. I hope it! i try to use virus marketing to promote the the seo idea for see more boonex! ;-)
Logic Prevails.

Looking forward to new developments.

Did anyone read this review of Dolphin 7 by some team called the FlashDaWeb? It is found here: http://www.flashdaweb.com/blog/2009/03/17/dolphin-7-first-impression.html

Some good points it mentioned are too many javascript files and too many css files being referenced, and that the HEAD section is about 150 lines of code which must be interpreted by the browser before the BODY.
LightWolf
Hahahaha i read that link you gave us fidelg3. Everyone trying to get their hands on new Dolphin early.

Quote;"If boonex.com send me a copy of dolphin 7 to e-mail that would be great and I’d tell my ideas about it to everyone."

Well heck if Boonex would send it to me i would put it up and tell everyone..lmao
cmegghross
The homepage needs to be simplified similar to the new facebook. I love it though can't wait to purchase the product.

Ok, this isn't going to win me any more friends, but .. uh.. When I found Dolphin, it was on a search for suitable DATING or relationship focused community software. I know many people wish to use it for non-dating systems, but can we not forget that it was designed and promoted as such, and you're leaving the demographic that you targeted?

I hope this doesn't mean 7 will be even more difficult for dating sites. As it is, the matching system is difficult to grok, and even with the couples profiles, see more setting it up for alternate type relationships is tuff because it assumes 1-to 1 matching ala typical boy meets girl. I wouldn't fuss about that because that is the norm with dating software, but if you move even further away from a dating application, will I have to start searching for something again?

Understand it's a business decision to make the system easy for non-dating use, but please don't shift to primarily social and make dating features a forgotten sub-set of the features set.
LightWolf
Let's hope we get the best of both worlds and we can be able to turn the dating parts on or off, so that everyone can be happy.
MichelSwiss
I'm with you ladybugn !!!

Me too choosed Dolphin (it was v. 5.6) to build a DATING site.

Even if D7 is the best staggering script with so many possibilities, I'm quite unhappy with it to run a Dating site :-((

I know that BoonEx already planed to split Dating and Social networking script for the next release (D8 / ???) and I am still impatient to see that ;-)
TheGateKeeper
I cant wait to see 7 after all the bugs and glitches are ironed out and see all its bells and whistles.
totallyfreak
this is all great news!! :)
im very impress about the new version and layout of the dolphin 7... its all i expect! but i found another dating software who maybe can be the only one real competitor... emeeting script... i suggest boonex team to take a look... the admin and user panel is awsome and very attractive.. all in ajax... maybe boonex should take some good part of this script for the version 8 of dolphin... of course im with boonex from the beggining so i will stay with dolphin for my see more 3 websites... but emeeting is very interesting... i hope this comment will be read by the boonex team and they will see what i mean.... the big point that i was amaze its the dashboard of the admin... all the stats... completes stats about members and content... a little last action wall (facebook alike) of the recent action of the member on the main admin dashboard... possibility to member to record a audio, and a video main message on their profile page... etc... for now.. we only see the demo of dolphin for the front end... i dont see yet the admin front end... maybe the layout was already improved.. but if not... please take a look at the other script... if boonex need a link to see the entire script... i install it as a test on one of my domain...

in other part... i just want to make a suggestion about backup... im really scare about this function... vital function... actually i got a very good host... but i dont know for how long this host will be in business... with the actual economic crisis... so... make a backup of database is easy and dont take so much time to download... but backup every video, mp3, photo..... its another work... so what if i download backup of database every week... but not the content.... if my host going down... i got my database content... im safe... but what about the content.... the script should automaticly delete the content when its not appearing on the server... automaticly or manually with a button in the admin section... this way... all the media will be remove and they will not show it as a error 404.... because i cant afford to download a backup of 10gig of media every week... so if my host goes down... i will just have to find another one, reinstall dolphin... and restore the backup of the database... to keep my member and stuff clean... but the member will just need to reupload their pics and mp3... without any complication...

this is my suggestion :)
killerhaai
Thats one good reason, but make from your whole domain an daily backup.. Oke only possible if you have a dedicated server...

And Yes, E-meeting is what compitors a serious candidate. I use it for a local social network. They are working on a wall plugin for the user account page...
Re: "Honestly, there's no excuse for not doing it before. BoonEx is a community and BoonEx.com should be powered by community software - by Dolphin."

Now, this is what is meant by "putting your money where your mouth is"

:)

A well thought out and recommendable strategy.

Thanks for all the hard work Boonex team, especially for taking into a/c non dating community sites also into the equation...very much appreciated....looking forward to the release.
that was meant to be "positive"

:D
lsbadmin
I havent had a big look around but I like the new layout and sub menus.
Index page looks clearer, fluent, and well organised.
Page transitions feel like silk.
I am hopeful of seeing a better TinyMce thingy which will
help my users (at the click of a button) embed web images, and web videos directly into forum posts etc.
The little things (as previously mentioned) like multiple upload capability, and as with this forum, neat well presented comments boxes, are what keeps people coming back to see more your site.
Initial thoughts are positive.
I am hopeful that all this hard work translates into a more admin friendly interface too, where page construction and essential element design and layout are configurable by complete novices like myself.
Its looking good so far though well done.
Robbie
The process is now running to an informed timetable. I am impressed with the way you are giving out information and times to the next steep. This has given us conferdance that the show is on the right course. Its going well and Looks Great. Thanks. Keep it up.
wcsboonex
i purchased another dating software as I was not Knowing when this software was ready but if it is coming out today with a version to look at I will reconsider buy before developing other software to my needs........will there be something to look at today? If not I need to keep going with the programming all weekend......can you let mem know?
toxom
when will we download new dolphin7 ?
KewlBuzz
And finally the developers are getting "Logic" and in "Business".

I never understood why Dolphin was not running in al Boonex sites.

Good Move!!!
ejwannabe
What if we still want to install version 6.1 in the future. Will new licenses be backwards compatible with 6.1? Will you have a mechanism to license for people who still want to use the previous version? This is essential for me as a developer.

Below is the legacy version of the Boonex site, maintained for Dolphin.Pro 7.x support.
The new Dolphin solution is powered by UNA Community Management System.
