BoonEx Dolphin & Google Wave

Andrew Boon posted 29th of May 2009 in . 41 comments.

Here's your communication revolution - the Google Wave. Be sure that Dolphin is going to have it integrated as soon as it becomes available. Should work perfectly well as Dolphin Extension and looks like a perfect fit at what we do in Poseidon.

Definitely watch the video.

wooo hooo... this is AWSOME news!!!
WESWAYS
lol ya never know google may even learn something from Boonex lol :)
Awesome, it's good to here that Boonex is keeping up with technology and what is happening...
CALTRADE
That is good to know. When I read about that I actually considered that it might be a threat to what we are all doing - it is open source and looks fantastic. Interesting that it is made in Australia - you guys are making some good stuff down there.

update - how in he world did I get this - I was on facebook and it said there was a new post!

Google Wave Developer Sandbox Account Request
Thanks for signing up for Google Wave!

Alright let's fire this WAVE up!!!!!! I going to remove BOARDs for the time being, Drop a big Splashy Wave their for now on sombRIA.

Mullti-Server Colaboration Robots... Are you FRICKEN kidding me...The LANAGUAGE, Andre... Real-Time translation FckYEAH!!!!
sombRIA
Well I spent the last 10 hours chewing through this...

This will be alot easier then I thought. I would just build a WAVE Plugin. Since the Federation Protocal will be building a "trusted" WAVE server network then an optional feature is best, ESPECIALLY since there will be serious SA side management more so the OSFlash/Red5.

But did you see how small those code blocks were:) They weren't kidding when they said it was lite-wieght and easy to extend.

Thought we had a lot of Dolphin see more Mods now, wait till people figure out how to create Robots. I already have about 3 in mind.

Forget CRON build an AutoBOT -> Hell yeah!!!!
sombRIA
And...

AutoBOT this: Moderation and Prunning Powers. My JOB will be observation as my Bots and Community Collaborate in Real-Time. Yeah this is definately a MAJOR rewrite for Dolphin.

We can make it "dumb-dumb" proof. Automate, Automate, Automate...

Almost as exciting when I found you FRAKS of Code! :)
sombRIA
WOW -> Okay the rework for Dolphin is definately going to minimize some options, but I see more of a Admin WAVE module. Activate your WAVE like a RMS

Remember the SCALBILITY of this thing should be left to the Community Builder. Let's treat it like a ORCA or RAY Major Module Addition The FISHIEs NEED some WATER :)
sombRIA
Plugin Area for Dolphin expansion... Make it an end user Community Option. D7, D8, D9 you get the picture.

Posiedon -> WAVE is the CORE! It just has to be, to opitmize content gather/storage. By the time Posiedons ready Google should have a pretty good Project Foundation.

Definately going to increase server LOAD and hardware necessity but probally less then RMS currently. I don't know, but it sure was fun thinking about how this will scale the BoonEx Philosphy of SingleProfile / Universal see more Movement / Amongst Multiple Communities without rebuilding such profile.
sombRIA
I figure BOARDS is the most USELESS feature (in General) and replacing it with a WAVE option keeps the CORE and enhances the hell out of Poseidon.

But what will it do for the local 'content creation' do we introduce into Poseidons Core?

Most importantly... How we going to train everyone how to use it? :) LOL

So many Q's glad all be ahead of the Wave!
Technoman
I agree with you,

yes boards is useless and can be replaced with google wave app
houstonlively
I like the concept of boards, although in it's current state of development, it's just a toy. If it were improved on so that it could use eternal symbol libraries, such as flow chart symbols, or engineering symbol sets, it might be a useful collaboration tool. I wouldn't replace it... I'd improve it.

I don't think webmasters will need to worry about training people on wave basics. you can bet that Google will spend a lot of time and money in that area.
sombRIA
Time and Money is commercial this "WAVE" is Server Open Source, so they probably will have Forums and Self Help but the Federation Server Platform(s) will ultimately burden the cost and support but will enjoy the profits as well.

Technoman, I change my mind. Wave must be a plugin which is nothing more then building another Page in Dolphin. But I will deactivate BOARDS immediately upon firing up WAVE as it does some groovy things, groovy things.
houstonlively
I might have missed it in the video, but it wasn't exactly clear whether a wave server would be open source. So I looked and found this statement:

"This is just the beginning. To help potential wave providers get started, our plan is to release an open source, production-quality, reference implementation of the Google Wave client and server, as well as provide an open federation endpoint by the time users start getting access."

Good to know. For a minute, I was worried that they'd see more act like Adobe and be selling a wave server for $5K.

Social networking sites will be great places to promote this technology. ....and I was thinking about integrating a web mail client into D7. This changes everything :)
Chrixxi
Let´s see what wave really can!?
from sombRIA "Most importantly... How we going to train everyone how to use it? :) LOL"
Thats right. So many new things every day.
boogerd
this looks pretty amazing

thats fantastic news, I have followed the demo, and I see really nice things we can use into our foundation. wowow

finally email is evolving, about time! :)

I saw this yesterday... very cool on integrating it into Dolphin!
this is the future...

I was hoping for a post like this while watching the video last night...
houstonlively
I'm very curious about what the wave server requirements will be. If the integrity of all those waves depends on data stored on the wave server, wave providers will need absolutely bullet proof servers.
westmerch
woua! i kind of agree with caltrade above too;
That "Rosy Bot", instant translation tool is scary (but what an innovation, i mean scarily good);
Csar
OOOH. EMMM. GEEE.... THAT WOULD BE A BIG STEP.. ANYTHING THAT HAS TO DO WITH GOOGLE IS GREAT. IN A FEW YEARS FROM NOW GOOGLE WILL DOMINATE THE WEB, IF NOT ALREADY.
SpaceJazz
Anything that has to do with google is great?

Okay, Guy Montag - I understand.

Googles attempt is allways to get Knowledge and Knowledge is power. Google uses the xmpp protokoll (Jabber) but is the core really "open Source" or the same thing as Android or other Attempts to become personal Informations?

Google plays allways the "good" guy from the "neighborhood", allways giving many things for free - but are these things really free? The answer is no. It´s allways see more about tracking and collecting information. So Google gives all kind of "free Tools" to the users. All kind of collected data, such as personal behavior Android (Cellphone), Google Desktop, Google Search, Google Search Engine, Goole Mail, Goole Wave - where are you going? What are you doing? Who are your friends? Age? Sex? Income? Search Results? Search Keys? Email? Social Networks? Books you are reading? Google Books (Next) ... can be crosslinked, analiced - to get you transparent.

If this is not enought take a look to Googles DNA / Genetic Project: http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/apr2008/tc20080418_112207.htm

In this Project, you can give your Genom to Google. This means, Google can sequence your Genom, screen it with ohter Genoms and get a good view about the Birth, diseases, possible diseases and the death of everybody. Think about the possibilitys.

So, if Google is giving something for "Free" - remember allways your privacy and liberty and remeber: Google is not about "Open Source", it´s about money and control.
SpaceJazz
To understand my point of mind:
- Wave looks great.
- Wave is a step-forward

but:
Where is the data be stored?
What is the advantage for Google?
What happens to my email?
What is the price we have to pay?
What modules are "really" open?

if:
Wave is really "open" it´s okay.

Defining the term open:
Every code line must be readable.
The Complete Code must be run on a private server, with no interfaces etc. pointing to a external source, with the user is not in see more control in.

To Boonex:
You´re doing great. The Dolphin 7 needs more improvement - but I´m looking forward to the release.

Thx,
SpaceJazz

SpaceJazz: "What is the advantage for Google?"

When you take some time to think about what Google has done here, and the future possibilities, this can evolve into so much more than a communication innovation. The future possibilities are extraordinary. This technology sets in motion, a means by which Google can attack Microsoft's long standing reign over desktop applications. As the client-server & Federation protocols evolve, internet based applications that surpass the capabilities see more of their desktop counterparts, become a reality. Editing spreadsheets, CAD drawings.... anything... with other people from around the world, in real time, in different languages, becomes reality. Imagine being able to sit in Houston TX, and be able to work on a CAD drawing in real time with someone in Japan, who doesn't speak a word of English. The possibilities stagger my imagination.

What's in it for Google? It gives them a way to take down Microsoft... something they'd love to do. I'm all for it. I'm not a big fan of Microsoft. Google has introduced this as a communication platform, but I believe they have bigger plans. There's much more to Google Wave than meets the eye.
jcad
Yeah I agree but I don't see any hate-Microsoft stuff. My conclusion is that Google is fundamentally in a different evolutionary layer -- they are NOT a knowledge based company like Microsoft, IBM, etc. They have managed to leverage that future-shock stuff to get into the UNDERSTANDING business -- at which they excel.
SpaceJazz
@HoustonLively
I agree with your post.

I`m on the Net since 1985 - a time there was no Internet, only ARPA. So I know the history of the web as one of the pioneers and developers very well.

My point of view is a "free internet", it´s information, security and the freedom of opinions. People tend to use new technologies without thinking about possible consequences in relations of personal data. Most see the nice "Gadgets" and other "wizz stuff". When we are talking see more about the internet and development, let us go back to 1990. Since this time, many companys tried to make money on the Web. But there is only one major Company in the last 9 years in the History of the Internet, with a massive Hunger for Information in all forms. No Company in History except Intelligence Services, IRS or what ever - showing this massive hunger for personal data. And Google does it well. The focus of google is information and the results of the collected informations. Not only USA, Australia, Canada, Europe - no the complete world. Is Google a company from planet mars, from outerspace? No, it´s a company from earth with the focus to make money. And if a company makes money, on this planet, in this solar system, it´s logicaly to be caught in a crossfire of influences. A company with so much power and knowledge in terms of data of people.

Now this company is introducing a new type of protocol. That protocol makes thinks so easy to do. Forget now segmented aplications, everything comes together, fast. Okay, nice but nothing really new or revolutionary. It´s a clever mix of allready known techniques, combined with google services. Hungry services that collect data.

There is no question about the future of the possibilities.

No question about the skaleability.

No question about a world with better workflows.

This is really a step forward, but also a BIG security problem.

But there is a question about things to keep in mind:

Black or white is a old gameplay between companys. Apple is "white" - Microsoft is "black". But if you know history, you will know, there is no black and white.

What ever... we will see.

The video triped me out! I'm Loving Google!!!

@SpaceJazz

I've read through all the whitepapers and one thing that's a little vague, is wave storage. It is not 100% clear to me whether or not all docs, images, etc, contained within a wave are stored only in the wave store, or if those items are stored on client computers, with a schematic of how it all goes together stored on the wave server.... or whether every single thing needs to be stored on the server.

The whitepapers cover the protocols, but skip over the hardware that makes all see more this work. Were you able to extract anything about this that might have flown over my head?
SpaceJazz
@HoustonLively
I agree with you. My conclusion is: Everything must be stored on the corresponding Wave server (cloud).

http://www.waveprotocol.org/whitepapers/google-wave-architecture

Trust is the key if Wave owns your desktop.

We will see...

SpaceJazz

pm:
By the way, the next big thing is called GDrive. It´s a cloud storage service, rolled out by Google next time also a part of the Google App Engine. Available soon...
houstonlively
Yeah, I read that whitepaper, but I wasn't able to draw the same conclusion. What I gathered, was that only wave operations were stored in the wave store, and I assume that just the data necessary for pending wave operations was stored, until those operations and data were passed along to the necessary clients. The whitepapers are pretty preliminary... I need more input.

watched the video should be interesting

Great Great job on what your doing with dolphin 7!!

But can you please try to integrate the ability to change the background like dolphin 6 and allow transparency on the profiles.

If you can thanks,
