Blogs are back. Plus some info.

Andrew Boon posted 24th of June 2010 in . 16 comments.

Ok, by popular demand we've brought Blogs back to homepage and Blogs page. Still, latest changes and different requests showed the need for a few Unity updates, and, perhaps more importantly, FORUMS overhaul.

Within the next 2-3 weeks we plan to work on improvement of Market, Websites, Blogs and Jobs here at Unity and a major update of Forums (in D7 too).

Additionally, we have some interesting bits to share about D8/Trident, which we plan to start posting sometime next week, but for now, for Premium members only.

Sounds great Andrew!

Any timeframe for 7.0.3? Are you still planning on putting out minor updates around once a month as previously stated?

Thanks,

when you mention overhauling the forums, are you going to work on orca, or have you finally realized that forum is basically antiquated? in 2006 when it was released, yes the concept of AJAX was neat and exciting, but nothing has been done to the orca script since it was released that would make it more user friendly, and adaptable to what todays forums require. have you looked at DeeEMM's work on what has been done with the orca forum, and this is one person doing that work, and just not understanding see more why this has not bee addressed by the developers prior to now.

Again, you mention overhauling, however, there are several things that have been promised in the past that still have not come to fruition. The moderation of the blogs and forum. Are you actually going to do anything to change the moderation aspect or is what we have now, just about as good as its going to get? If you can let me know, then i will quit harping about it. but seems that for two years now, it has been promised better moderation tools, and they still dont exist, or at least not accessible to me.

Yes u should definitely conrtact DeeEmm so u dont have guys work on same thing he already done. so far..
@tomakall: first d7 should be error free and devs should be work on that. Isnt it illogical start work on something as old is not finished ? If devs will be working on d8 they will have less time for d7 and this whole dolphin project will be never stable....

@ freakpower: Dolphin is stable sofar if you dont need extreme things like all modules or RMS. :)

The only thing what disturb me is, that every update give another problems with mods who where working in the version therefore.

In fact is the core code stable enoch to build things up.

I hope Dolphin 8 will be released soon!
I'm looking forward to more news and screenshots about it!

@Andrew - Thank you for listening about the blogs. For other reasons, I seldom use them here any more but that decision essentially eliminated the blog here - no one is going to go through profiles to find new blogs - the profiles themselves aren't very good here. The "blogs" link on the main menu still is all the boonex blog though - I still don't understand why you don't use the same tools you designed into D7 - you could have a dropdown for "Company blogs", "member blogs", see more "top blogs" , etc.

I also have to say I totally agree with what Freakpower said here about getting D7 to work properly before you start working on "Trident". The most important part of D7 - the join form and search functions, still do not work properly and have major functional flaws. It still hasn't caught up to where D6 was in these areas and is a major problem for anyone trying to get D7 to work in the real world. I'm not going to say what these major functional flaws are- if Boonex doesn't know by now, they simply don't want to know, but deleting blog posts, falsely closing trac reports, hoping it gets buried in the forums, etc, won't make these issues go away - it will just means it will take longer for your members here to understand the issues and try to come up with workarounds for the serious database bugs in D7.

I can't post in forums. It hangs after I click submit. This happens since yesterday.

its good to move on to next level,
it would be nice if D8 has new set of project team :)

It is a bit of a pain in the ass to say the least to have to login to read some simple blog post. Normally a guest could read the darn post, but now I have to login to read some blog post that really isn't that important that one would want to upgrade just to read it. Granted in the future there may be some. If you are shooting for more members paying a fee to read some blog posts then it really isn't worth it for the most part. Nice to see boonex still has the dollar/currency in mind. Many in this see more community talk about dolphin like it is the only thing out there. It is nice with many features, but every time I turn around there is some new fee, expensive mod (if someone wants to alter it for free then someone is complaining it was their mod). I understand Boonex has to make some moola too, but I just get tired of all the crap involved with this thing. Too bad there is so much bs involved with this and that it is constantly changing for more money. I really hope those of you that are developing a site can make the money back you invest in all this, because there is only a extremely small percentage of sites that break even, not to mention profit. To invest hundreds or even thousands of dollars just for the fun of is is nuts. Better of going to a casino, playing the stock market and such. Your odds of success are much better than investing in dolphin by far. But to each there own. If you got the money to burn then go for it everyone. Best of luck with it!

I just don´t get it. Why would Boonex even mention next version updates (meaning D8) when D7 has not been released as a final and fully finished, out of the box version. If only my website was wrong... But I hear it from people who obviously know what they´re talking about and I really wonder what is this all about? Is Dolphin just a dream? A never ending dream? I signed up a a year and an a half ago or so and still all I see are promises about the next big thing coming our way...
I still cannot see more launch my site because I have no time to deal with an unfinished script. Why would I even start it when I know beforehand that it works, but with a lot of bugs and at the same time, those who should be working in releasing a finished version are, in fact working in other projects...
So, again, Andrew, why don´t you and whichever team works with/for you, concentrate in finishing Dolphin 7 and have it run for 1 or 2 years so that it becomes a standard within the social-network scripts. You may work on whichever project, version update you want after that time, but not before...
This is my humble opinion.

Hernán

All I can say is, here we go again..ughhh, some things never change...

Cant wait for some upgrades :)
Also would be great if we could install and uninstall single modules instead of them relying on others to run.
