Bite Size Suggestions to Improve Unity:

mydatery posted 21st of January 2010 in Community Voice. 12 comments.

Andrew asked so here is my suggestions:

1.  Bring back the Jobs section to Unity.  We need it to reduce the job requests getting posted all over the blogs & forums.  It will clean things up considerably and hopefully not take a ton of coding.  I realize it could take considerable coding so just keep us updated on it.

2.  Improve Moderator permissions so they can deal with the spam.  We we're promised this site would be more spam free and it's loaded with spam right now.  Perhaps a word filter/spam filter would be a great introduction into Unity in an attempt to help curb it.

3.  Review the posts and note those who have applied for Moderator, been voted as positive by the community but no steps have been taken to give them that status.  Not all of us will qualify, but at least make a final determination on this.  This step can go a long distance towards allieviating much of the backlog of moderation that exists on Unity when coupled with step 2.

4.  Permit open discussion of topics that might be very difficult to discuss but have a negative impact on Unity when they are not discussed.  The censoring pof posts just because it might be personal or remotely personal is not always a good thing, this is a business type community, not a myspace type community, we are adults and professionals, this means we must deal with unpleasant situations from time to time here just as we must do in our own businesses.  It goes with the phrase:  "One aw crap can destroy a thousand attaboys".  Let's take care of the aw craps so we can just keep adding to the "attaboys".

5.  Let's create a means that streamlines the "Certification" process of the Unity Market, that does not overload the Boonex Admins/Developers and protects the mod developers from having their items stolen.  Within this we need a system to address and swiftly resolve issues when a mod developer is accused of stealing/selling another mod developers mods.

6.  Posts have been made repeatedly to the forums concerning searching for topics, posting, respect of volunteers, spam and many other things.  Let's get those posts stickied to the top of each forum as a means of helping improve the community by giving the newbies a way to see what is going to get them the fastest resolution to their topic.

7.  All of us stick to the rule that "Blogs are for the discussion of topics in regards to Unity/Dolphin/Boonex" and kill the support style blogs that keep showing up in it.  Support is for the forums, blogs are for topic discussions that may/will evolve into things and often require much longer conversations than forum topics and may not have a quick/decisive solution to them.  This is an item we can all help with and doesn't require more steps out of Boonex to implement.  It does mean that we restrain from providing support in the blogs when they post a question and instead direct them to the forum.

I know steps 1 & 5 are not super easy things to do, the others are not difficult at all and will free up time for steps 1 and 5 to be completed down the road.  This is my opinion of how we can improve Unity.

I honestly don't know where you get the time for all these "War and Peace" length posts Mydatery- this is actually one of the shortest I have seen. How is your community coming along? - you can, of course, implement all these suggestions on your own site. In general, there are two kinds of members here: those who's main objective is to build their own community and try to help others in the same boat, and those who provide some kind of support services. I've been here a few years see more now, and I can tell you that most of the "drama" here has come from the later. I'm not a psychologist, but I can also tell you that when someone really goes over the top it also seems to follow a patten. They are often very smart technically, but they get an overblown sense of their own importance to this community - and when someone calls them on it, they go crazy.

I also don't share your opinion that this site needs more "moderators" - unless they know how to act with some restraint. When Boonex first selected some moderators they immediately went out killing threads and telling people that they should "move on" from discussing certain topics - but in some cases didn't apply the rules they wanted to enforce to themselves. One guy Boonex selected had never contributed a thing and had never built a community, but the first thing he did was censor a totally harmless blog post of mine. As far as I know, that is the only thing he ever did here - he had a grand total of seven posts. The moderators here should limit their activity to providing technical support, and deleting obvious spam.

The problem with moderators on this site, is that the only thing they can do with a post, is delete it or hide it. If you are going to have moderators, you need to give them more moderation tools... like the ability to move a post, instead of just deleting it. Previously, blog posts had 2 levels of threaded comments, and really couldn't be moved to a forum. With this new blog format, it should be be easier to move blog posts to a support forum, or a more appropriate place.

I definitely agree see more with recommendation # 1. I need to post a few job ads, but have nowhere on this site to do it.

Yes.... a streamlined market certification is needed. There are a lot of garbage mods being posted, and certification will help separate the good stuf from the trash. The market really needs categories, instead of just listing all the mods in one big contiguous list, Tags aren't good enough.

I'am totally agree with this section of houston If more and more mods are coming it will one chaos.

Certification may help. It would cost me quite a bit to get all my mods certified at it's current cost, but i do agree that something like it would help. What about these trusted badges i see all the boonex people with mods in the market seem to have. How are those obtained?

Already mentioned, but i agree with it, there needs to be a jobs section.

I also agree with categorizing the market. The tags are just messy. Should be switched to fixed categories.

Keep trac for the source stuff, and see more dump the wiki part of it and replace it with a decent wiki like mediawiki or something. Provide access to it by some of the top members here to help provide content for it.

@ Deano

A trusted badge should certainly be given to other members besides boonex staff. Maybe that is something a seller could publicly ask for and have members vote on it.... I'm not sure Boonex staff knows members well enough to be the judge. There should however, be restrictions on who could vote. Someone that's only been around a few months really doesn't know people well enough to vote on something like this. There are at least 20 members on this site that know which other members can see more be trusted to do business on straightforward terms. I don't necessarily agree with all of the opinions of those 20 members, and I may not even like some of them, but I would trust them to cast an honest vote.

On the other side of the coin..... should we have a scumbag badge?
deano92964
Hmmm. a scumbag badge. That would work if boonex chooses not to ban the scumbags. At least if we can stamp a reject on their forehead as a waring to others.

Even though Point 1 will be cumbersome to implement but it will definitely be a valuable addition to Unity. Good post.
