Apparently when any members with yahoo e-mails join our site, their activation e-mails either go to their spam folders, or never show up at all. is there any way we can fix this?
We have Domain Keys Identified Mail and Sender Policy Framework setup.

I've registered on one of my test setups and I can confirm that emails are sent to Yahoo! Mail's spam folder. Seems it might be an issue with the way the message is set-up. BoonEx Certified Host: Zarconia.net - Fully Supported Shared and Dedicated for Dolphin |

are you by chance on cPanel?
Actually, that reminds me that my Media Temple installations didn't have this issue (they have their own web panel). I actually tested this on a setup with Arvixe.

Arvixe is my host, and yes, CPanel. |
I can confirm, this issue seems to only occur when the email comes from a host with CPanel. I just ran a test on my Media Temple account and it went to my main mail folder, no issues. BoonEx Certified Host: Zarconia.net - Fully Supported Shared and Dedicated for Dolphin |
do you know of any way around that? |
yes if 'a' was on their game as they state with the testing of D7 RMS they would know what the dealio is;
Greetings:
The Quality Assurance team discovered a bug within the
SpamAssassin ruleset that will mark messages sent in the year 2010 (that's
today)
and beyond with a higher spam score than expected. This bug can
result in legitimate mail being flagged as spam.
The cPanel Development team has issued a hot fix that
will address this issue and will automatically update the SpamAssassin ruleset
to
resolve this issue. If you have automatic cPanel updates enabled, no
further action is required.
If you do not have automatic cPanel updates enabled, you
can manually update the SpamAssassin
ruleset by executing the following commands in a root shell:
/scripts/autorepair spamd_y2010_fix
For a more detailed explanation and information on
resolving this problem on a non-cPanel environment, please review:
https://issues.apache.org/SpamAssassin/show_bug.cgi?id=6269
As always, the entire cPanel team has pulled together to
provide a rapid response to this issue as we realize proper email delivery is
mission critical.
If you need any assistance, our 24x7 Technical Analyst
team is standing by to provide you with further instructions, answers, and
solutions to this bug. To reach them please submit a ticket via:

So, it was essentially a mini Y2K?

SpamAssassin isn't enabled on our server (we haven't enabled it). |

So, it was essentially a mini Y2K?
not really, with all the changes in the mail servers, ended up having a glitch in the spamasassin creating a higher score than was typical say even 6 months ago.

ok then do some research on your IP address. you are on a dedicated machine, but that doesnt mean you dont have a bastardized IP address that somebody was using for months on end shooting spam and running phishing sites. clean IP's are getting harder and harder to come across IPv6 come will ya.
have arvixe run a clean scan on your IP see if the IP has a house on any of the RBL's, you might find that its going to be amazing.
also, you have to add the sites email address to both gmail and ymail or they get kicked to the garbage can.

I don't use yahoo at all, and Gmail only for the periodics (and I normally don't read them). the biggest issue is for the users. |
Plus, all my periodic e-mails are going to my Gmail spam folder, but that I don't care much.
if you are not using gmail, then you threw me a curve ball here.
follow the same advice check on the cleanliness of your IP(s)

well i suppose that i can run it down like this. a few months back all of the big mail servers implemented a new filtering system, and basically what it did was take any and all IP's that were not on the ACL and decided that as a new IP came in that was not already approved to communicate with the mail servers, it would be deemed as having spam-like behaviors. now this can mean several things and this was written about on several of the larger blogs here a while back when this was happening.
so what happened was that every IP that was not on the ACL, meaning belonging to or being registered by one of their own clients customers, it was determined to have spam-like behavior, not saying the IP was sending spam, just the emails were trapped as having spam-like behavior.
ok thank goodness for automation eh?
well the end result is that not everybody uses ymail, hotmail, windowslive, or gmail, so there you kinda have it.
thus requiring each IP owner be it the DC or NOC to submit this long drawn out form about the birth history of your IP and the email practices that would be coming from said IP.
so again i state sir, have your ISP provide you with a clean bill of health on your IP address that you are paying money for.

Make sure that the 'From' email address that you are using, belongs to the domain from which you are sending the emails. A common spam filter rejects emails that have a domain name in the 'From' field that is not the same domain from whjich the email is sent. This filter is used because that is the way most spam email is formatted and sent. My opinions expressed on this site, in no way represent those of Boonex or Boonex employees. |
