New Registrations - Email Verification

Please can someone point me in the right direction, how do I get members to have to verify via email when they sign up to my site?

Currently, a member can enter anything as an email address and they are active on the site straight away.

I can't for the life of me find the option to change this :/

Many thanks,

Try in Settings->Moderation Settings.

martinboi is in fact correct with his suggestion

administration --> settings --> Moderation Settings -->

Untick Automatic profile activation after joining

Untick Automatic profile confirmation without confirmation email

this will require an approval from the admin. also, need to make sure of your standard and promotional membership access levels on this.

Legends, thanks guys. I could have sworn this was possible, goodness knows why I overlooked this all day.

Will give it a go and hope for the best. Many thanks :)

Well I've tried this and it has made no difference whatsoever!

I have tested with the "Automatic profile activation after joining:" box unchecked (a member still could sign up and log in straight away using the entire site).

I have tested with "Do not change profile status after editing profile information:" box unchecked (a member still could sign up and log in straight away using the entire site).

I have tested with both of them unchecked and still a member could sign up with anything in the email field and login/use the entire site.

The only other box is the "Automatic profile confirmation without Confirmation Email:" but I want my site so that a member registers, receives an email with a verification link and only once they have checked their email and clicked on that link does their profile become active and allows them to login.

Please could anyone advise how I can set it up so that the above (in bold) happens.

Many thanks,

You have to reverse the meanings of the statements. As with many things in Dolphin, the English translation in a lot of areas is abysmal and the commands make absolutely no sense whatsoever.

I have now set my site up using those settigns.

I signed up as a new user and was alerted that an email confirmation had been sent, however, the new member can still use the site (add sounds, blog posts etc etc) without having to click the verification link in the email. Is there something else that needs to be done? The new member appears as 'Standard' membership in the admin panel. I still haven't clicked the verifcation link in the email and it appears there is nothing that a new member cannot do on the site.

Any help greatly appreciated, thanks guys

could it be possible that you are logged in as admin. new users are set to promotional for 7 days by default, heck i couldnt even see a way to change them from promotional. so i guess you would need to turn off promo, because whatever membership level you have setup as the promotional is what access the new member is being granted. now i was able to move around some in the site, but did not have full access, not until the member was approved from the admin panel.

check that boss and let us know.

Hi DosDawg,

Definately logged in as the member and not logged into admin because I'm using a different browser.

Signed up as new member, took me to the create avatar page where it notified me that an email confirmation had been sent. Without even checking the email, I continued to use the site with no limitations at all. Promo is disabled on my site by the way as we don't use that feature. I couldn't see anything of any relevance for this in the membership actions but I'm guessing there is something I've missed :/

Thanks :)

I have the same problem as zigojacko.

Quote · 15 Nov 2010

I have the same issue with zigojacko.  I've unchecked the box for "Automactic profile activation" for a while and it seemed that they were complaining about why they couldn't view someone's profile.  I told them they needed to verfiy their email addresses.  They didn't realize that since they could upload photos, video, etc etc. Yes, it's very confusing. It's better NOT to let them use the entire site before the email verification.  Right now, I decided to do it without the email verification because it's not clear. :/

Quote · 15 Nov 2010

Please can someone from Boonex respond to this to clear this issue up, if a number of us are experiencing this then could be an issue with the platform preventing this from working in the way that it should...? Who knows.

No, it's not the sending of emails that's the problem, it's the fact and Boonex developed feature appears not to work as it should. If we enable email verification for new members on the site, then we would expect access to the site to be blocked until their account is verified. This isn't happening.

I think boonex needs to look at this.  The whole email verification concept is a mess.   :(

With the settings you have specified in your attachment, members can still sign up the site and add events/sounds/videos/blogs etc without having to click the link in the email to activate their account.

Have you "un ticked" all three?  This works perfect, you can upload avatar and browse the site, but are "denied access" to uploading and so many other things.... I have attached an email sent out with all three "un ticked"

also included a snap of the screen of the site while I try to add an "event" without doing my confirm in the email, I think this is as far as you get without creating new membership levels.

I'm just sayin...

Well yes because all three are unchecked by default so this was the settings before I wanted to introduce email verification.

Thanks

Is this not the original question? Your results are in the pictures on my previous post. How much more do you want them blocked?

I think this is where site "moderation" comes in on your part..

AlexT, please could you advise on this if you get a moment? Desparate to get this in place. Thanks

Right, we have almost got our dev site upgraded to 7.0.3 now. I have tested this email verification again now and it's almost working how we want it (perhaps it was a bug in 7.0.2)?

However, an email is sent to new members to verify their profile now before they can add anything to the site but when they click on the verification link, it displays a message saying thanks for confirming your profile, your profile will be activated within 12 hours and will be manually approved by admin etc etc etc - What???

Why is this happening? I just want members to verify their profile by clicking the link in the email and then they can use the site - I don't want to have to manually approve tons of members every day. Why is this so difficult to get in place? It's standard across every other website!

I currently have only the middle box checked in the Moderation Settings in admin panel. Please can someone advise how to disable manual/admin approval of new members.

Thanks

Zigojacko, I also have the same difficulty using 7.0.4.

A new member can sign up but before confirming their email were able to post to wall add files etc.

The main problem with this is that, my site is only a week old and still in beta, and already the spammers have attempted to post rubbish. luckily akismet prevented most of it.

But the point is that simply the potential member should get and do nothing until confirming by email. Just like aweber and other autoresponders work.

I've spent all afternoon fiddling but not getting anywhere

Can someone from Boonex PLEASE acknowledge this and advise accordingly. I reported this ages ago now and we were left to diagnose and test countless options ourselves. Thanks

The settings Skyforum referred to are clear enough when you know they are there but they don't operate as they should, as I mentioned in my previous post.

The best I have come up with so far is, using Skyforum's settings, and Martinboi's subscription mod, is to set default account on joining to 'standard' (which can't be disabled) and give absolutely no access to the site, bar FAQ etc.

I created 2 levels of further membership, one basic and the other advanced, then when testing sign up the page gave me the two membership options to choose from and also told me that the account was suspended until I chose a membership option.

Even though a confirmation email was sent it was useless, and once a membership option was chosen the account became active. After choosing the membership I confirmed the email but was presented with a message 'account already activated'.

I've yet to test it further (tommorrow) but for the average honest punter two big membership options staring in the face might be OK. It's the spammers I don't want though.

Hope this helps

I to have same issue with email verification. Please Boonex fix this so members can only have access to main site AFTER they click verify in their email. Please take away that awful admin approve mess in 12 hours... The internet is all about instant access, and well if new members are like me, they can't even wait for the microwave..lol

All I can say, is that in 7.0.4 with the settings below, everything works as it should:

confirmation.jpg

A confirmation email is sent, new user gets access denied everywhere, until the confirmation link is clicked.  Some third party modules, like IBDW SpyWall don't seem to mind if the user has not confirmed, but that's not a Boonex issue.

Just tried your set up on our live site (7.0.2) and it doesn't work as you described. Hoping to get our live site upgraded to 7.0.3 by the end of the weekend so will give it a try then as well. If it still doesn't work, then I guess will have to wait until we can get upgraded to 7.0.4

Do you have to manually approve each member that verifies their profile via the verification email though or are they automatically approved?

Thanks

Just upgrade all the way to 7.0.4 while you're at it.  There have been hundreds of bug fixes between the version you're running and 7.0.4.  It really doesn't make much sense to do any testing at 7.0.3.

Discussing bugs in a previous version, doesn't do anybody any good.  You would have saved everyone a lot of time had you mentioned that you were running a six month old version of Dolphin.

It's not that simple. Our live site is using a custom template and a lot of the files are heavily customised. Upgrading to 7.0.3 has taken over a month currently.

This was a feature in 7.0.2, it is available in the admin panel - Regardless of whether I notified everyone what version of Dolphin I am using, if it was a bug or had issues in 7.0.2, then someone from Boonex should bloody well speak up and say so. It's all I have been after from the very original post.

There were 86 issues reported and closed for the 7.0.3 release.... 92 for the 7.0.4 release.  That's 178 bug fixes between the version you are using on your live site, and the current version.  In 7.0.4, for whatever reason, this feature works just fine.    I don't know how else to sum this up.

Yeah fair enough. Thanks for the info.

Is there somewhere I can view all the bugs / fixes for pervious versions? I can only see future milestones (7.0.5) in the Roadmap.

This is actually in the language keys, so you can change what it says by entering a portion of that text on your admin pages>settings>language settings>manage keys, and searching for the key (hint: the keys w/ that text, and related text, are _USER_CONF_SUCCEEDED & _EMAIL_CONF_SUCCEEDED). There you can edit them to say whatever you want.

Not sure about your other issues, but hope that helps!
